Why are cockroaches hazardous to health
Hey there! Cockroaches are much more than just annoying little critters Did you know? Other studies suggest that these little dudes can make a protein that can create allergic reactions and lead to asthma attacks.
Cockroaches are also known for carrying bacteria that can spread in our food through their waste and saliva. And some not so fun illnesses like food poisoning, diarrhoea, and even Staphylococcus infections can follow. Cockroaches are “unhygienic scavengers” in our environment, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
It should be noted that cockroaches aren’t directly linked to any certain disease, but they do have the habit of transporting microorganisms that can cause intestinal problems dysentery, diarrhoea even cholera and typhoid fever. Gastroenteritis one of the illnesses most commonly connected to cockroaches can cause diarrhoea, fever, and vomiting.
If you’re feeling sick with a symptom or two of nausea, abdominal pain or fatigue, it might be worth the trouble to check for some cockroach activity because they could also be carrying parasitic worm larvae! Cockroaches can spread some 33 different types of bacteria, including E. coli and Salmonella, as well as several parasitic worms.
Oh, and did you know: Children are more likely than adults to develop cockroach-related allergies, according to the EPA. So, obviously these critters can bring some health challenges!
Here are 7 ways cockroaches can impact your health:
1. Food Contamination: Cockroaches are not picky eaters and will chow down on everything from dead plants to animals to scraps of soap and paper. At night, unfortunately, they roam around, so they can easily dirty uncovered food with their feces and skin, which they shed.
2. Bacteria Transfer: Cockroaches can leave saliva and digestive fluids behind when they eat, which can transfer germs to the food you consume. One of these germs, known as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, leads to a number of health problems.
3. Bites: Although it’s uncommon, cockroaches might gnaw on your fingernails, or on soft skin, if they are especially hungry during an infestation.
4. Invasion: Cockroaches are sometimes a little too curious for their own good and may crawl into your ear or nose while you’re asleep.
5. Food Poisoning: One of the biggest food safety concerns from cockroaches is their ability to carry Salmonella, a bacteria often associated with food poisoning.
6. Allergies: Their saliva may cause allergies, resulting in sneezing, skin rash and watery eyes.
7. Asthma: Cockroaches may not be your best friends if you have asthma. Their allergens have been shown to worsen asthma attacks in humans, particularly among people who live in infested homes.
But if you have cockroach allergies, fear not! Your doctor may recommend some effective over-the-counter medications, such as antihistamines and nasal sprays, or prescribe a treatment designed specifically for you.
