What you should know about ants and food
Oh, it's time for BBQ's, munchies, pool parties, and picnics! We have so much fun, but oh my, ants was a little problem we face almost every time.
Did you know that there are over 12,000 species of ants in the world? These tiny dudes are also really strong, lifting 20 times their own weight. Some queen ants can live for years and have millions of babies. They have no ears, and when they fight, it is to the death.
But first let’s talk about what really invites ants to our party:
Foods That Attract Ants
Anything Sweet: Yes, they have a sweet tooth like us! They adore syrup, sweets, honey, sweet pastries, and won’t turn down a beer or a sweet drink to wash it all down. And don’t forget to wipe up those crumbs and spills after devouring your favorite goodies.
Greasy foods: Who would have guessed, a juicy burger from McD’s isn’t only a temptation for us! Others ants are eager for all that protein and fat, which lurk in greasy scrapes. Like us, ants require protein for growth. So be sure to store or discard any meaty or oily leftover foods properly.
Other Insects & Animals: Ants also get a lot of protein from eating other insects and animals.
Damp Foods: Ants are very attracted to moisture, and that’s why they tend to visit our trash bins or check out kitchen spills. Staying clean and dry is a good prevention method.
Fungus: Other ants are into mycelium, and will gnaw on leaf detritus to harvest their own variety of garden goodies. If you have ants scurrying about in your garden, it could mean they’ve found their ideal fungal utopia!
In fact, ants are not picky eaters at all!
