Buying 2nd Hand Furniture…
Hey there! One of the sneaky ways bedbug infestations can occur in our homes is through second-hand furniture. It’s true! Once these little pests take root, they can be very hard to eliminate. It typically requires more than one treatment, which has the potential to add up quickly, so it’s best to err on the side of caution.
The adult bedbug is 4-5mm in length, oval in shape and either brown or reddish-brown. They may have slightly flattened faces with beaklike mouth openings for biting. Their bodies can swell up and turn dark red after they’ve had a meal. Baby bed bugs are pretty much the same, just slightly colorless before they grow and turn brown.
Before you haul home that second-hand piece of furniture, let's take a look at it! Examine for blood spots, atrophied eggshells, skin shedding, rust-colored droppings, a musty odour, or brown/black droppings. If you spot any of these signs, it’s probably best to take a pass on that item — it could be crawling with some uninvited visitors.
Prevention Tips
Here’s how you can easily prevent bedbugs from setting up camp in your house. First, do not bring home furniture left on the curb, especially anything soft like a mattress or sofa. If you travel frequently or a lot of guests come through, every now and then, look at your bed sheets for little blood (and black) spots. When you are on the road, keep your suitcase off the floor, and cover it with plastic. A compact one, which is also useful for spotting bed bugs in hotel beds and chairs, can be particularly helpful. And if you really want to be sure, wash everything you were wearing (and use hot water) after you get home; that way, any hitchhiker can’t make itself at home!
