5 MYTHS ABOUT MOSQUITO BITES
Hey there, summer lovers! It’s that time of year again to enjoy the sun, get in the pool, and sit around the campfire with family and friends. But before you grab that sunscreen and head out for summer fun, there’s one little critter that could try to steal some of your summer vibe and that’s the mosquito!
We all know that feeling of being bitten by those pesky bugs, but don’t worry there’s no shortage of ways to keep those bugs at bay and to get through those bites when they do happen.
Let’s debunk some common myths about mosquitoes so you can enjoy your summer to the fullest:
Mosquitoes and Blood Types:
You may have heard that some blood types attract mosquitoes more than others. Listen, the truth is, you aren’t sweet blood! Mosquitoes are attracted to people based on qualities such as size and skin, as well as the bacteria on our skin. Some blood types may create more of the substances that draw them in, but it’s our carbon dioxide and body heat that they follow. Even grown-ups may want to stay alert, as mosquitoes seem to like adults best of all.
Using Mosquito Spray:
Good news! Some sprays will repel mosquitoes, but not all of them will do such an effective job. Citronella is one popular option but it may not be as potent as you might expect. Choose sprays that have 10 30% DEET or picaridin for better protection. Just use them wisely, too many is not good!
When Mosquitoes are Most Active:
You may want to avoid mosquito bites by staying indoors during specific times of the day but that’s not necessarily the case! Although they are likely to be buzzy at early hours and after dark, they can be up to no good at any hour of the day. So, watch your back from sunrise to sunset!
Do Most Mosquitoes Carry Disease?
With some 3,500 species of mosquitoes, it’s easy to fret about disease. Not all mosquitoes chew on humans, and only a few of those that do are actually disease carriers. Even so, it’s wise to protect yourself especially from varieties like the Tiger Mosquito, which carry West Nile virus and Dengue Fever.
Scratching Bites:
And here’s a big one scratching those itchy bites doesn’t make them heal quicker! Indeed, it can actually intensify the conversation through irritation. Instead, put on some hydrocortisone cream and let your skin heal. You could even test out vitamin C, fruits like honey or citrus juice, but going back to the basic tenant of ‘sometimes less is more’ works best.
